Clutch Services

While most vehicles on the road today are designed with an automatic transmission, many older vehicles were built with a manual transmission. Also known as a stick shift or straight shift, these vehicles require a little more driver involvement when it comes time to change gears. Not only will a vehicle with a manual transmission require a driver to pay more attention to the sound and feel of a motor, but the driver must also use both their right hand and left foot to change gears with a shifter and compress clutch pedal. In a manual transmission vehicle, the clutch works by engaging and disengaging the engine power to the transmission. This way, you’re able to change gears and stop the vehicle without the engine turning off completely. The parts of a vehicle clutch are clutch disc, pusher fork, throwout bearing, flywheel and pressure plate. Just like any system that uses a lot of moving metal parts, it’s only a matter of time before these components wear out, especially under harsh driving conditions. Understanding the importance of the clutch in your vehicle's drivetrain is vital. As It plays a key role in connecting and disconnecting the engine to the transmission, making regular maintenance vital to prevent transmission damage and maintain fuel efficiency. Ignoring clutch problems can lead to more significant issues, resulting in costly repairs. The clutch does wear out over time, but the repair is a relatively simple maintenance job compared to the more expensive repair of the transmission. Sometimes a clutch disc wears out to a point where it needs to be replaced completely. Other common problems include stretched cable controls, a leak in the hydraulics and occasionally air bubbles formed in the hydraulic line.  If you think you are having issues with your clutch in the Smithtown area it's best to make an appointment or bring it to our Smithtown Transmissions Auto center where one of our many certified techs can run diagnostics and pinpoint the issue...
